“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-until you climb in his skin and walk around in it”(30).
When Scout came home complaining about how much she hated Ms. Caroline as her first grade teacher, Atticus tried to help Scout see the light in the situation. Ms. Caroline had little to no experience as a teacher due to being very young and just starting out in her teaching career. Although Atticus was mildly upset how she Scout to stop learning so she could be at the same level as the other students, he told Scout to think about how she felt being new to teaching and having someone that you weren’t taught how to deal with. This statement means that no person can really understand another completely no matter how close you are. Everyone has struggles that they don’t show and things going on they wouldn’t dare talk about. In the whole novel, each character has to or could have seen things from another point of view. For example some might have just seen Mr. Cunningham in the mob and immediately thought he was a bad person, but not seen how he felt about it. Even Scout and Jem went through this with each other. While Scout just thought Jem was irritable and got annoyed too easily, she didn’t realize he was just growing up and she didn’t have the same maturity level. To Kill a Mockingbird has a lot of character conflicts whether it be two people or two complete races of people. If they each thought about how the other person felt, the fights would have been shorter and resolved.
In our daily lives, many people face and have to deal with unpleasant people; it’s a part of life. What defines us is how we deal with these situations. We have two choices: be rude and unkind back, or think about the problem from every angle. I know everyone says how terrible bullying is and how we need to end it, but most don’t even realize they are the bullies. If we took time to think before we talked to think about how others feel, I’m sure we could end fighting.
